What is the purpose of Lent or fasting Lent is a time of preparation, when we get ourselves mentally and spiritually ready for Easter. There are three traditional components to Lent. Fasting is just one of them. The other two are prayer and almsgiving. All three are intimately connected, and all three have the purpose of opening us up to God by breaking the barriers we usually put up against him.

Love Our Parish Members Each parish is a FAMILY. Our Lord calls each of us into this community of Faith and Love. Just as our family at home experiences different stages and particular needs, so does our faith community. We delight and great effort through every time and season. In the parish setting, our community gathers to celebrate the living existence of the Lord who is made present through the Divine Liturgy and the Sacraments. We also celebrate through the decree of the Word and through one another, especially when we reach out in love for our sisters and brothers.

“Advent—Joy in Waiting”
As we await the anniversary of the birth of Jesus, we often forget that Mary’s son is not the only child destined for greatness to be born at this time of year. We forget that Mary’s relative Elizabeth was also pregnant and had, by the Advent stage of our story, given birth to her son, John. He would grow up to be John the Baptist—the prophet who foretold Jesus’ greatness and to whom Jesus went to be baptized in the Jordan River. We forget that Jesus’ birth was not the only miraculous one depicted in Luke’s gospel, but that Elizabeth, too, gave birth under marvelous circumstances. Let’s hear how Luke sets the story up: “In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron and her name was Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God living blamelessly according to all the commandments. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years.” One day when Zechariah was working in the temple, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and told him that he and Elizabeth would be blessed with a child. Astonished, Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know that this is so? For am an old man and my wife is getting on in years.” Not being one to have his word doubted, the angel snapped back, “I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur.” After the angel’s appearance Elizabeth conceived and for five months she remained in seclusion. She said, “This is what the Lord has done for me when he looked favorably on me and took away the disgrace I have endured among my people.” (Luke 1: 5-25) Here is a woman who had waited all of her married life to have a child. She had endured the scorn of her community for being barren. She had been an embarrassment to her husband and her family. And then her waiting was rewarded in the way she least expected. The story tells us Elizabeth had given up hope of ever having a child, but even in her hopelessness, God heard her. What have you wanted for so long that it seems that nothing else will fulfill you—but it never comes? What do you feel you have been preparing for all your life? What have you given up waiting for? Longing is one of the most human of feelings. We are creatures who are able to imagine a future for ourselves. We are capable of seeing things as they might be. A child. A spouse. An education. A career. A better house. A closeness with your family. An opportunity to be of service. What have you wanted for so long that is seems that nothing else will fulfill you—but it never comes?

Can a person be a Christian and not attend church?
This is a valid question, since going to church does not save people. They are saved (and get to go to heaven) by getting right with God. Still, getting right with God is only the start of being a Christian, as a birth is only the start of having a life. We understand that some people may find themselves in a position where they do not attend church for a short time. (Perhaps they just moved to a new city and have not found a church, or are in the hospital and can not physically go to church.) That is not what we are referring to in this section. This section is about people who can not be bothered with going to church and purposefully and consistently stay away from church. We believe that such people can not remain Christians for at least three reasons:

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin MaryThere’s a fragment more to the dogma of the Assumption than that. The Church does not just “presume” that any canonized saint in is in heaven. Rather, it confidently declares that a person is in glory and should therefore be honored in liturgy and replicated in life. Our church calendar is filled with saints' days. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, declared that the clean and tidy Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory

Why the death of Jesus Christ is sufficient ? The first Bible verse I remember learning was: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). However, it was not until I had accepted Christ as my Savior that I realized the meaning of the word "gave." It meant the death of Jesus Christ for my sin. Christ paid my sin penalty for me. Death means separation and as a child of Adam, I was spiritually separated from God. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross paid the debt of sin that I owed.

Did Jesus have brothers? that a first century stone ossuary had been discovered that is believed to have held the bones of St. James, the brother of Jesus, also known as "James the Just." The ossuary carries an inscription that says, in Aramaic, "James son of Joseph, brother of Jesus." the box as evidence against the perpetual virginity of Mary, however this does not follow. The ossuary identifies its James as the son of Joseph and the brother of Jesus, it does not identify him as the son-much less the biological son-of Mary. The only point that Catholic doctrine has defined regarding the "brethren of the Lord" is that they are not biological children of Mary. a matter of speculation. They may have been Jesus' adoptive brothers, step-brothers through Joseph, or-according to one popular theory-cousins. would be little surprise if it were being used in that way. In fact, that's what you'd expect. While the inscription does not establish the brethren of the Lord as biological children of Mary, it does have an impact on which theory may best explain the relationship of the brethren to Jesus. If James "the brother of the Lord" were Jesus' cousin then it would be unlikely for him also to have a father named Joseph. This would diminish the probability of the cousin theory in favor of the idea that this James was a stepbrother or an adoptive brother of Jesus. The stepbrother hypothesis is, in fact, the earliest one on record. It is endorsed by a document known as the Protoevangelium of James, which dates to the year 120, within sixty years of James' death (A.D. 62). According to the Protoevangelium, Joseph was an elderly widower at the time he was betrothed to Mary. He already had a family and thus was willing to become the guardian of a virgin consecrated to God. The stepbrother hypothesis was the most common explanation of the brethren of the Lord until Mary, as he appears to have died before our Lord's public ministry began. likely the correct one, but it does nothing to refute Catholic doctrine.” Source : Catholic fourms http://forums.catholic.com/showthread .php?t=14965 |

BA'UTHA (ROGATION) OF THE NINEVITES There are two reasons for the observation of this three-day fast in the church of the East: firstly the fast of the people of Nineveh at the time of Jorz, and secondly the influence of Mar Savreesho, metropolitan of Beth Slokh, in the sixth century. The prayers are found in Hudra volume 1, pp. 359-468. They contain Madrashe, Qiryana, Tishbohta, Burqafna and other elements. However, the prayers of Ba'utha go beyond the information recorded in the Bible, which says that Jonah was not satisfied by what God told him and was unhappy that the 120,000 people were not destroyed as predicted. When the people of Nineveh approached Jonah with the glad news of the grand civic reception they had arranged for him, he refused to accept any honour from them. Finally he acquiesced because the honour was accorded to him by Gentiles who they were expressing their gratitude to God for listening to their prayers and saving their lives. The king of Nineveh placed Jonah on the royal throne and the people of Nineveh, including the king, paid their respects to Jonah for warning them of the danger which led to their repentance. The Ba'utha of the Ninevites is observed nearly three weeks prior to the beginning of Lent, which often is in the month of January or February. Do you like to join Catholic Church? When you're a beginning Catholic, questions arise. Repeatedly Too often, the answers aren't easy to find.
Before you decided to join the Catholic Church, you may have many questions about Catholicism. It turns out that many of them were fairly common Catholic questions. But even so, you had to do a lot of digging to find many of the answers. Most sources for questions & answers about Catholicism refer you to the Catechism or other Church documents for sources. This can be a problem for those becoming Catholic: before accepting the authority of the Catholic Church, one doesn't see those sources as being reliable!
To ease your entry into the Catholic Church, here are some of the more common questions about the Catholic Church. We use Scriptural sources to provide answers for these Catholic questions, where possible. This approach is more neutral for many who have questions about Catholicism.
Who founded the Catholic Church?
Jesus founded the Catholic Church. The New Testament shows that Christ purposely created a group of people of disciples to carry on his mission in the world. This community is the Catholic Church, which has existed since the time of Christ and the Apostles. What is the source of the Church's authority?
Christ himself is the source of the Church's authority. Christ founded the Church, created its structure, placed Peter at the head, and gave it his own authority, identified it with him, promised to be with it forever, and sent his Spirit (the Holy Spirit) to guide it
What do Catholics mean by "Tradition"?
Catholics refer to something called practice. What is it? Where does it come from? And why would anyone care about anything except the Bible, anyway? Are the Pope and the Church really "perfect"?
The concept of perfection is one of the most common Catholic questions. It's widely misunderstood. But this topic, properly understood, is an important part of a strong faith in the Risen Lord! Shouldn't I just follow my ethics?
Understanding ethics is essential to the moral life. Strengthen your faith with solid Catholic teaching on moral principles. When was the Bible written?
The Holy Bible contains many individual books, and was written over a period of about twelve or thirteen centuries. All of the New Testament books, though, were written during a short period of time.
What's different about the Catholic Bible?
The Catholic Bible has been the same for nearly 2,000 years. We use the same set of Old Testament books as Jesus and the Apostles used. But Protestant reformers rejected some of those original books in the 1500s, creating a Protestant Bible. What is Purgatory? Purgatory
What does the term Purgatory mean? Where does it come from — is it Scriptural? And do we still believe in Purgatory?

WHY JESUS CHRIST WAS BORN ?
Sometimes we forget the real reason we should be celebrating Christmas. It's not to celebrate the coming of Santa Claus, or the decorating of trees and our homes. And it's definitely not to celebrate the existence of all our retail stores and shopping centers. And it's not just to remember that, according to tradition, Jesus Christ was born on this day some 2,000 years ago, but the fact that Jesus Christ was born , for our personal benefit. There has been born for each of us, personally, a Savior; and He is Jesus Christ our Lord. this is why the love of God our Father sent us Jesus, and why He sent us John before Him; that we would come to regret and be saved. The lighting of the arrival and Christ candles speaks to us of the remembrance of why we are here, and why Jesus Christ was born ?, and why He will come again?, for that is our arrival today. Let's listen to this message of grace, hope, joy, peace, and most of all, love.

Sin Sin is a theological expression for evil conducts, individual or group. It is to be well recognized from misdemeanor, a legal expression applied to break of the rules that society forces on its members, and from associate, a proper term applied to a practice or habit that is destructive to a person's moral nature. Sin specifically refers to conduct that involves a wrong attitude toward God and results in aggression from him. All the major religions have a concept of sin, although they varywidely in their understanding of its meaning. Hinduism, for example, in the doctrine of Karma, presents a system by which human action works itself out in payback or reward by regeneration in another life. Good action unties the hold of the world of the senses; a bad action humiliates and connects its victim more fully to the cycle of karma and the Transmigration of Souls. Final freedom from the round of regeneration comes only when the soul ends to desire or to act and is fascinated into the divine source from which it came. A sin, in Christian theology, is not only a act, but also a thought, motive, or desire in opposition to the eternal law of God. This is illustrated by the traditional teaching of the Seven Deadly Sins: pride, greediness, desire, jealousy, excess, anger, and idleness. Pride is regarded as the sin that most definitely separates a sinner from the loveliness of God. Relief is possible only through Jesus Christ, whose sacrificial death converts the sorry sinner from the penalty and power of sin. Source: Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry , http://www.carm.org/seek/sin.htm |
